Schedule: Flexible with the student schedule. May involve some weekend fieldwork. Not to exceed 20 hours per week.

Overview:

The intern will work with NPS staff in collaboration with SUU outdoor recreation professor Dr. Kelly Goonan to analyze visitor use and transportation data from Bryce Canyon National Park. Primary duties will entail data analysis and reporting. Data sources include vehicle and trail counters installed at the park, recreation resource condition assessments, and visitor counts from viewpoints and other locations within the park. Some fieldwork may be required to assist with checking equipment deployed in the park and downloading data. The position will be based at SUU during the fall semester, with some occasional travel to Bryce Canyon required.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Analyze data from summer fieldwork and produce appropriate summaries
  • Assist with producing technical reports for Bryce Canyon National Park
  • Occasional travel to Bryce Canyon to continue data collection (requires being able to hike up to 10 miles in steep terrain)
  • Present research findings to park staff

Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work well in a team setting
  • Capable of working independently on assignments with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency in computer applications (Word, Excel)
  • Willing to spend extended periods of time in the field and comfortable in outdoor environments with limited cell phone service
  • Capable of hiking across uneven terrain in a variety of weather conditions carrying a field pack, water, and personal supplies
  • Capable of field trip planning, logistics, and risk management
  • Valid driver's license
  • Experience with data analysis or coursework in statistics preferred
